What is Behavioural Supports Ontario?

Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) provides behavioural healthcare services for older adults in Ontario with, or at risk of, responsive behaviours/personal expressions associated with dementia, complex mental health, substance use and/or other neurological conditions. BSO also provides support to family care partners and healthcare providers across sectors.

What are responsive behaviours/personal expressions?

When talking about dementia and other mental health conditions in older adults, the terms responsive behaviours and personal expressions describe words or actions that reflect how a person is experiencing their environment. These behaviours are recognized as forms of communication that may point to unmet physical, emotional, or social needs. Responsive behaviours/personal expressions can be verbal (e.g., crying, grunting, yelling, asking repetitive questions, making sexual comments, cursing) or physical (e.g., banging, kicking, collecting items, fidgeting, grabbing, spitting, pacing).
